A-32 weight: 1.1 carats. size: 12x9x1.6 mm. Great color and pattern on all parts of this Lightning Ridge opal. It’s hard to believe this stone only weighs just over a carat because the face is so big. This is because it has been cut very thin, thus making it appear to weigh 3 to 4 carats when set. This gem would suit either a ring or pendant, in silver or gold. Price: $30.
A-33 weight: 6.2 carats. size: 19x10x5 mm. A perfect stone for a bezel set pendant, this 6.2 carat opal from Coober Pedy would look good in silver, but certainly is of a high enough quality to deserve setting in gold. All the colors of the rainbow are present and sparkling, though the red tends more towards pink. Price: $50.
A-34 weight: 3.6 carats. size: 19x7x3.6 mm. - A perfectly shaped pendant stone for those who like the color BLUE! This Queensland boulder opal would look great set in silver, with either a bezel or a bell cap. Price: $45.

B-1 weight: 1.7 carats. size: 17x6x1.9 mm. A very unusual Queensland boulder opal, and our favorite one in this auction. Being very thin, it only weighs 1.7 carats, but looks like a larger stone weighing over 3 carats. The color is bright, but a little sparse. However, when it plays over the surface, which is made up of a yellowish potch, the effect is most appealing. Price: $30

B-2 weight: 4.15 carats. size: 9x14x3.6 mm. A great ring stone, this solid Queensland boulder opal features bright green striations in a sea of honey potch. Blues and gold play slightly, and there’s even a tiny touch of red from one angle. One little sliver of the ironstone matrix almost intrudes on the top edge, but that could be covered up with either a bezel or a well-placed claw.

Being more than half of an inch long, this gem would suit the hand of a guy or a girl. The green rolling flash looks wild in the sunlight. Price: $50.
B-2 weight: 2.6 carats. size: 9x12x4 mm. You can tell that this is a boulder opal because of the small amount of ironstone still on the back. Most of the stone’s body is translucent, turning sunlight into orange as it passes through.

With crystal opal this good you can afford to set it in gold. It’s bright enough to still show plenty of color scintillation when vertical, and so would make a wonderful pendant. Being about a half inch long it certainly won’t be missed, even in subdued lighting. Price: $95.
B-3 weight: 1.66 carats. size: 7x9x3.4 mm. A fabulous little lady’s ring stone from the Lightning Ridge opal field of New South Wales, Australia, world famous for producing the best black opal. The term “black opal” refers to the body or matrix color. This one is about a third of an inch long, and could be called a “semi-black” or “dark gray” opal. Price: $95.
B-4 weight: 5.05 carats. size: 13x10x3.4 mm. A little imagination transforms this into a picture stone. There’s so much RED! it reminds me of sunset on the Queensland boulder opal fields.

The odd shape and striking changes of pattern allow for plenty of artistic interpretation. This opal has a lot of character, and at about half an inch long there’s plenty of room for the design to move. I’d personally favor a silver setting. Price: $25.
B-5 weight: 1.55 carats. size: 8x6x4 mm. Lots of green on an underlying blue in this bubble of boulder opal from Queensland, Australia. The color shimmers much like the adularescence found in moonstone. At just over a quarter inch long, this gem would probably work best as a ring stone. Because it’s such a bulbous shape, it shows a play of color from the sides as well as the top. The colors would particularly suit a silver setting. Price: $60.
